becoming Real.

Read the second sentence from each photo.
Valenteen is my teacher favrit book.

Yes, that is one of my little guys. Try to ignore the spelling and focus on the meaning. "velveteen" was the spelling word.

earlier in the week, i mentioned to my class that The Velveteen Rabbit was my very favorite book of all time. mentioned it just once. it's funny how the students who don't usually listen the first time, heard that. Three quarters of the kids used this idea as their context clue sentence for homework.

This book has a special home in my heart.
The illustrations and lyrical artistic way in which it is written.
without fail, i tear up every time i read it.

it seems just a simple story
the tale of how a little boy's love turns a velveteen rabbit into a real animal.

but it's not just a story about silly bunny with worn whiskers and ears.

it's the story of each of us
and how love awakens us.
makes us feel alive.
opens our eyes
and our souls

'Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but really loves you, then you become Real."

"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.
"Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt."

"Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?"

"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real, you can't be ugly, except to the people who don't understand."
..........................

That night, and for many nights after, the Velveteen Rabbit slept in the Boy's bed. At first he found it rather uncomfortable, for the Boy hugged him very tight, and sometimes rolled over on him, and sometimes he pushed him so far under the pillow that the Rabbit could scarcely breathe. And he missed too, those long moonlight hours in the nursery, when all the house was silent, and his talks with the Skin Horse. But very soon he grew to like it, for the Boy used to talk to him, and made nice tunnels for him, under the bedclothes, that he said were like the burrows the real rabbits lived in.. . And when the Boy dropped off to sleep, the Rabbit would snuggle down close under his little warm chin and dream, with the Boy's hands clasped close round him all night long.

And so time went on, and the little Rabbit was very happy - so happy that he never noticed how his beautiful velveteen fur was getting shabbier and shabbier, and his tail coming unsewn, and all the pink rubbed off his nose where the Boy had kissed him.

...................................

Weeks passed and the little Rabbit grew very old and shabby, but the Boy loved him just as much. He loved him so hard that he loved all his whiskers off, and the pink lining to his ears turned grey, and his brown spots faded. He even began to lost his shape, and he scarcely looked like a rabbit any more, except to the Boy. To him he was always beautiful, and that was all that the little Rabbit cared about. He didn't mind how he looked to other people, because the nursery magic had made him Real, and when you are Real shabbiness doesn't matter.

i've gone and done it

I've even found a way to keep them fresh. a little weird but it works. the fridge. save room in the back, right next to the coronas and salsa.

What can stand against?

my church is pretty blessed when it comes to our worship team, not to mention that the leader sounds exactly like Chris Tomlin... . and can play the piano, leaving the congregation in awe. I'm sure we will be singing this in the next few weeks. I've already had it on repeat in my apartment for hours.

Awesome in power _ our God!
God, you are HIGHER than any other... .

And if our God is for us,
then who could ever stop us?
And if our God is with us,
then what could stand against?

Let's start our day tomorrow with that thought.

What could stand against?
No weapon formed.
None.

i heart teaching: reason #5

Before continuing on with our lessons of two digit divisors today, my class started preparation for the NJ ASK [the standardized test coming up in May]. Among the topics to be taught _ reading a thermometer.

It was one question out of 15 _ that's it. just one measly temperature multiple choice question, but seriously i have been laughing about it all afternoon.

Thermometers can be tricky, especially for 9 and 10 year olds. You don't know which way to go, up or down and then there are negative numbers?!??! Holy cow. So in my simplification of this I stated, "With thermometers, you have to read bottoms up."

Well, this apparently was a doozy! After a brief pause, of 'did she REALLY say that?' I can only guess what was going through those little minds... . . the entire class, exchanging glances of googly eyes, started HYSTERICALLY laughing. One boy, who is typically on his BEST behavior at every moment in the day screamed out, " EEEEEwwwh!!! That's disgusting@!?!?!"

Well, forget it. I was belly laughing for the next five minutes. Uncontrollably. I'm not sure what exactly they thought I truly meant. Probably something about THOSE kind of thermometers {we all know which ones those are... scan back through your horrific childhood memories, there's gotta be one of those in there}

After finishing off the afternoon, which we really couldn't recover from [because of continued silliness] I got home, started busying myself about and then ..... again, just the thought of his little face scrunched up, "EEEwwwH!". i began laughing again. Surely, my neighbors heard me and thought 'what a lunatic'.

Sometimes these kids ... these kids.. can't help but love 'em

respite

my mom used to buy me a wall calendar every Christmas.
you could always tell which present it was. Two skinny square packages sitting under the tree ... one for my sister, the other_ mine. Without fail, every December 25th. Except this past one. Now, I can't really complain considering I received the best present of all, this laptop I now am typing with.

The problem, though, with this missing present is quite troublesome.
Have you ever searched for a calendar in January or February??? [not good. not good at all.]

When you're shopping during the holidays there are stacks and shelves full of them, varying from cheesy baby angel ones all the way to lighthouses of the world. But it seems some poor Borders employee has the job of packing these all up once the first of January rolls around.

Nonetheless, I have been without a wall calendar in my kitchen coming on three months now. Actually, truth be told, I still have the old one up. I just picked my favorite month from last year and kept it on that.

Today, in an effort to solve this problem, I went on Daily Planner.com of which I'm a fan. But today, nothing caught my eye. On next to calendars.com.
It seems one needing a calendar would be sure to find one here.
And I'm close to a winner, I think.
Still not sure if this is the one. I'm at 50%.

As I was searching, I came across this one photo.
It looked as if it was stolen from my iPhoto library. Take a closer look at the bottom row. It's the very house I caught with my camera this past summer. Cute_ but too pink.
I much liked another.

I have been wanting to blog about this house since I arrived home last August from Martha's Vineyard. There is a little village of Gingerbread houses come to life in the CampMeeting Association. My dad explained it all to me as we drove round and round in awe at the houses. A small religious village with a worship area that it centered round. I'm forgetting the details now_but the details weren't really all that important.
This one house was.
I loved it.
The colors.
The woodwork.
But more important its name.
